After searching, downloading, testing, and playing around, I’ve finally come up with a few tweaks for those of us running TomTom on our Nav-Cam. Available for download are two different files. One is a restore utility to use after performing a hard reset on your device, and includes menu software to replace the factory menu. The other is a small helper utility to launch said menu. Read about it by clicking the link on the side, and then leave your comments or questions here.
NOTE: There was an error in the restore file, which has been fixed. Please download the file again, and unzip it to the root of your SD card. My apologies for the mistake. -Randy
Randy: Can you post the “virgin” .reg file? I didnt backup mine and it bots into the desktop.
David, there is a “Factory.reg” file included in the .zip from step 2 of the Booting into Windows page. You can also do a “super-hard reset”, as described on the Frequently Asked Q’s page.
Randy - Thanks! However now that i think about it, can you tell me what key i need to modify to edit the startup program?
I.E. I want to start the D100 Menu instead of the Lite-On Menu.
Thanks!
Randy,
Looks great! Can’t wait to try this one when I get home this evening. One question, though–does this front-end incorporate any of the potential fixes for getting the signal strength meter in TomTom to work? Last I heard, you had to run GPS_NAND5 before starting TomTom to get that working, but I didn’t have any luck with that. I was hoping that maybe the new menu would have some kind of script you could kick off that would run any TSRs you need automatically. Don’t know if that’s possible or not.
In any case, thanks yet again for your fantastic work on making this great little device even better.
Cheers…
David,
Not recommended. I don’t remember the key off the top of my head, but if you look at the “modified.reg” file and compare it to the “factory.reg”, you’ll see the keys that were changed to boot explorer instead of mobilenavigator. However, I *HIGHLY* recommend that you continue loading the Lite-On menu first, and then launching the D100 menu from there, via the launcher script.
Two advantages:
1. Volume control on top works.
2. You won’t be left high-and-dry if/when you have to do a hard reset.
Matt,
As nice as that would be, no one has figured that out yet. It doesn’t look like it’s a TSR, but rather a setup command given to the GPS hardware over the serial port. It may be possible to figure out, but I don’t feel it’s worth my time right now. TomTom works just fine for me without the signal bars. I get quick, consistent satellite fixes without the signal bars, but have run into difficulty getting consistent locks when the signal bars are working.
The factory nav software is linked from the new menu, so you can very easily load the software, get the fix, and then exit. You’ll then have to re-launch the new menu, and end up with two running instances of it.
Like I said, I’ve done that, but it’s caused more trouble for me than it’s worth.
Have you ever gotten the current version of TomTom to run on this unit?
I don’t really want to have to buy a copy and then run around looking for version 6.0 on the web and possibly get in trouble for downloading from a warez site…..
I used the directions under the tweaks page to modify my device. However I am running into a small problem. I can’t get the Launcher utility to work at all. Instead when I click on navigator from the factory screen it comes up with an error and boots to windows. I tried running the launcher from my flash disk and it came up with the same error.
Error #2
Call\program
Files\Navigator\navigator.exe
Anyone know what this is about?
Hi Dan,
Sorry to hear you’re having problems. Did you run the 6th step?
“From Windows explorer, run the NavCam7700Restore.exe file from the root of the SD card.”
When you do that, it *should* copy all the files needed for the menu program. If it didn’t, then check to make sure you properly unpacked the .zip file into the root of your SD card, then re-run that .exe file. You can confirm that it worked by navigating through Windows explorer to \Program Files\Navigator and making sure that navigator.exe is there, along with a bunch of other files. If it’s not there, then the menu won’t load.
Let us know what went wrong–maybe I can revise the instructions so others don’t have the same problem.
Downloading now. TomTom has been awesome but a pain for any non-geeks. The steps required to deal with the taskbar, getting back and forth between the mp3 player and TomTom and other quirks have rendered it all but unusable to anyone but me. Primarily because I run it through my aux port so I use the mp3 player as my stereo when navigating. My GF is completely lost, and I find myself swerving trying to get back and forth between tomtom and the player. I guess what I’m getting at is thank you soooo much for this
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m thinking this warrants a second donation! You rock Randy! (Will come back if I have any issues or helpful tips to report)
Randy,
I appreciate all your hard work, and I have my device working very well. One question, do you have any issues getting a sat signal after going in standby? Do you exit the tom tom application before you turn off your device? Sometimes i find i have to exit all the way out then go back in.
Thoughts?
Brian
Any chance of working on a usb host option? ie usb hdd with movies/mp3’s? easy to build a power mod adapter to supply 5v to hdd…..
Btw great job on the TomTom guide. Thx

Randy,
I just got my Nav-Cam today (it’s much smaller than I thought it would be) and I can’t wait to complete the tweaks you’ve mentioned. In fact, if I didn’t come across your comments on the Woot forum I never would have bought it!
Thanks,
Todd
Randy! Just thought I’d share with you another good candidate for these tweaks. A cheap GPS system they’re carrying at Geeks.com. I’m tempted.

I forgot to mention that it’s also built on top of Windows CE, hence the reason for mentioning it here - it mostly pertains to our discussions
Thanks again btw for all the help throughout the process. While it seems to crash anytime I leave it in the car turned on, a quick reboot and the ole’ Navcam w/ tomtom works like a champ when I’m actually using it.
I’m new to this. Have Nav-Cam 7700 and would like to tweak it. Where do I find all those files you guys mention?
I followed your instuctions and when I ran the restore file I was no longer able to sync my NAV-CAM with my PC. Do you know how to fix this?
Hello I have a 7700 and would like to upgrade as much as possible, not very good with the tec stuff though, will you please tell me where to find the Tomtom download needed or some other system I can use,
Thank You,
George
